Program Overview

Completion of the Accounting program is designed to result in an Associate of Arts in General Business with an emphasis in Accounting. Course selection should be coordinated to meet the requirements of your intended transfer institution. This emphasis is achieved by completing two elective courses within the General Business curriculum.

Personal Income Tax (ACCT 250)

This is an introductory course in the study of individual income taxation and the preparation of the Form 1040.  This course covers filing status, exemptions, gross income and exclusions, business expenses and retirement plans, employee business expenses, itemized deductions, tax credits, and general administration of the tax law.  Students also prepare several tax returns using professional software.

Leadership Development Skills (BUSA 255)

This course is an application of behavioral science principles and skills to the practice of leadership in a variety of contexts.  Topics include team building, motivation, problem solving, negotiation, and self management.  A field experience exercise may be required.

Program Description

After completing the General Business degree with an accounting emphasis the student will transfer to a university and begin specialized courses at the junior level.  A student who wishes to take the CPA exam should register in General Business and complete the accounting emphasis and then transfer to a university to complete their studies.  This degree is not meant to prepare the student for employment immediately after they complete their degree at CSI.  If the student does not want to pursue a 4-year degree they should enroll in the Accounting and Bookkeeping program which does not transfer to a university.
